Ivan FrankoІван Франко

Polymath who produced thousands of works across poetry, prose, and social criticism

Biography

Ivan Franko was one of the most prolific and influential Ukrainian intellectuals — a writer, poet, translator, scholar, journalist, and political activist. Born in the village of Nahuievychi near Drohobych, he studied at the University of Lviv and earned his PhD at the University of Vienna. Franko produced thousands of works across virtually every literary genre: poetry, novels, short stories, plays, literary criticism, political essays, and translations. He co-founded the Ruthenian-Ukrainian Radical Party and was repeatedly arrested for his political activism. Together with Shevchenko and Lesya Ukrainka, Franko forms the 'holy trinity' of Ukrainian literature. The city of Ivano-Frankivsk is named in his honor.
