Kazimir MalevichКазимир Малевич

Pioneer of Suprematism and creator of the iconic Black Square

Biography

Born in Kyiv to a Polish-Ukrainian family, Kazimir Malevich became one of the most revolutionary figures in the history of art. His 1915 painting 'Black Square' — a black square on a white background — represented a radical break from representational art and launched Suprematism, a movement seeking 'the supremacy of pure feeling in creative art.' Malevich's geometric abstractions influenced virtually every subsequent movement in modern art, from Constructivism and the Bauhaus to Minimalism. His work proved that art could exist as pure form, independent of the visible world.
