Lesya UkrainkaЛеся Українка
Pioneer of Ukrainian verse drama who wrote through a 'Thirty Years' War' with illness
Biography
Lesya Ukrainka (born Larysa Kosach) was one of Ukraine's greatest writers — a poet, playwright, and activist who transformed Ukrainian literature despite battling tuberculosis of the bone throughout her life. Born into an intellectual family in Novohrad-Volynskyi (now Zviahel), she was educated through private tutors and became fluent in numerous languages including French, German, Italian, and English. Her pen name, 'Ukrainka,' was itself a political statement of national identity. She pioneered the dramatic poem (verse drama) in Ukrainian literature, with works like 'The Forest Song' — a masterpiece drawing on Ukrainian folklore — and 'Cassandra,' which used ancient Greek settings to explore universal themes of truth and power. She also translated Homer, Shakespeare, Byron, and Dante into Ukrainian.
