Biography

Mykola Lysenko is regarded as the founder of the Ukrainian national school of music. A composer, pianist, conductor, and ethnomusicologist, Lysenko was a central figure during the Ukrainian national revival of the 19th century. He composed operas, choral works, piano pieces, and hundreds of art songs based on Ukrainian folk melodies, establishing that Ukrainian music was a distinct tradition worthy of the concert hall. His opera 'Taras Bulba' and his 'Prayer for Ukraine' remain cornerstones of the Ukrainian musical canon. Beyond composition, Lysenko collected and catalogued thousands of Ukrainian folk songs, preserving a treasure of oral tradition for future generations.
