Serge LifarСерж Ліфар
Ukrainian-born ballet master who revived French ballet — 'Serge Lifar of Kyiv'
Biography
Serge Lifar was one of the most important figures in ballet history. Born in Kyiv in 1905, he studied under Bronislava Nijinska before joining Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris in 1923, where he rapidly became the company's premier danseur. After Diaghilev's death, Lifar was appointed ballet master of the Paris Opéra Ballet — a position he held until 1958 — where he created over 200 choreographic works and is credited with single-handedly reviving French ballet. Despite spending most of his life in France, Lifar always identified as Ukrainian, famously declaring 'I am a Ukrainian and my homeland is Ukraine.' His tombstone near Paris bears the inscription 'Serge Lifar of Kyiv.' The Serge Lifar International Ballet Competition has been held in Kyiv since 1994.
