Serhiy ZhadanСергій Жадан

Europe's most acclaimed Ukrainian poet, documenting wartime Kharkiv

Biography

Serhiy Zhadan is one of the most important European writers of his generation — a poet, novelist, essayist, and public intellectual based in Kharkiv. Since the beginning of the conflict in eastern Ukraine in 2014, and especially since the full-scale invasion of 2022, Zhadan has remained in Kharkiv, documenting life under bombardment with unflinching courage and literary brilliance. His work blends lyrical intensity with documentary precision, capturing the resilience, grief, and defiance of Ukrainians living through war. He was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2022, one of Europe's most prestigious literary honors.
