Taras ShevchenkoТарас Шевченко

National bard and founder of critical realism in Ukrainian visual arts

Biography

Taras Shevchenko is revered as the spiritual father of modern Ukraine — a poet, painter, and freedom fighter whose creative genius transcended the brutal conditions of serfdom into which he was born. While best known for his poetry collection 'Kobzar,' Shevchenko was also a professionally trained artist who studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under Karl Briullov. His visual works — spanning oil paintings, watercolors, engravings, and sketches — documented Ukrainian landscapes, peasant life, and historical subjects with the same passionate humanity that defined his literary work. His art bridged Romanticism and Realism, using visual imagery as a tool for social commentary and national awakening.
